Tricks For Ratio And Proportion

Tricks for Ratio and Proportion:

Some relations exist between different ratios which can be used to solve various problems.

  • If ;frac{a}{b}= frac{c}{d}, ;then; atimes d = b times c

  • If ;frac{a}{b}= frac{c}{d}, ;then; frac{a}{c} = frac{b}{d}

  • If ;frac{a}{b}= frac{c}{d}, ;then; frac{b}{a} = frac{d}{c}

  • If ;frac{a}{b}= frac{c}{d}, ;then; frac{a+b}{b} = frac{c+d}{d}

  • If ;frac{a}{b}= frac{c}{d}, ;then; frac{a-b}{b} = frac{c-d}{d}

  • Componendo -Dividendo

  •                  If ;frac{a}{b}= frac{c}{d}, ;then; frac{a+b}{a-b} = frac{c+d}{c-d}

    Illustration: If 3: 4 = 12 : 16 then find the value of x in the relation 3 : 12 = x : 16

     Solution: to find the value of x we will use the relation

    If ;frac{a}{b}= frac{c}{d}, ;then; frac{a}{c} = frac{b}{d}

     Here it is given that 3 : 4 = 12 : 16

    The ratios can be written in fraction form as

    frac{3}{4}= frac{12}{16}

    Using the relation

    If ;frac{a}{b}= frac{c}{d}, ;then; frac{a}{c} = frac{b}{d}

    we get

    If ;frac{3}{4}= frac{12}{16}, ;then; frac{3}{12} = frac{4}{16}

    Converting them into ratio we get

    3 : 12 = 4 : 16

    So the value of x = 4
